Administer your preferred settings for the Cookies setting
In general, the application used to access websites allows by default to save Cookies and/or similar technologies to a terminal. These are stored for the periods described in the table shown in point 11 below. These settings can be changed so that automatic administration of Cookies is blocked by the browser or so that the user is notified each time Cookies are sent to his terminal. Why are Cookies and/or similar technologies important for the Internet?
Cookies and/or similar technologies are a focal point for the efficient functioning of the Internet, helping to create a friendly browsing experience that adapts to each user’s preferences and interests. Disabling or turning off Cookies may result in certain websites or parts of websites becoming unusable.
Turning off Cookies does not mean that you will no longer receive online advertising in compliance with the law – it just means that your device no longer keeps track of your preferred settings and interests that you have expressed through your browsing behavior. Examples of important uses of Cookies (which do not require a user to be logged in to an account):
Content and services customized according to a user’s preferences – product and service categories.
Offers adapted to the user’s interests
Comment on passwords
Commenting of parental control filters for Internet content (family mode options, safe search functions).
Limiting the number of times an advertisement can be played – limiting the number of times a user can see a certain advertisement on a website.
Provision of essential advertising to a user.
Analytics measurement, optimisation and adaptation – such as validating a certain level of browsing traffic on a website, what type of content is being viewed, or the way a user accesses a website (e.g. through search engines, directly, from other websites, etc.). Websites run these analytics on their users in order to adapt their services for the benefit of the user.
Security and privacy perspectives
In general, browsers have built-in privacy settings that provide different cookie acceptance levels, their validity period and automatic deletion after a user has visited a certain website.
Other security factors regarding Cookies:
Tailoring your browser settings with respect to cookies in order to provide you with a comfortable cookie usage level.
If you are the only person using your computer, you can, if you wish, set longer periods of time to store your browsing history and login personal information.
If more than one person has access to your computer, you can set the browser to delete personal information after each time you close the browser. This is a variation of the option to log in to the websites that send cookies and delete all information when you close the browsing session.
